2009 Carp Calendar Cutie Contest - Week 1

Last Thursday night marked the beginning of the 2009 Carp Calendar Cutie Contest. The contest was held at The View on Lake Wissota. The contest was set to start at 10pm with registrations being taken starting at 9. We arrived shortly after 9pm and, as one of the judges, were able to find a particularly nice seat for the show. For any girls out there wanting to know how they can get involved with the contest this year here is a link to the Official Rules.

Information and a picture for each of the four contestants for the evening in no particular order:

one word to describe her: asian-persuasion!

turnons: a nice ass
turnoffs: rude people
bonus material: says her best feature is her personality and her worst feature is that she's married?!

You've already seen the information provided by our contestants so let's move on to the judges. Tonight's judges include Paul from The View on Lake Wissota, Chad from Miller Lite, and Drews (that's right... me!) from Eau Claire Bars - the Blog. With my position right in front of the ladies I was able to get some great pictures and knew exactly how the contest was going.

Early in the first round there was a lot of discussion about the first and third contestants, G.I. Jane and Sommer respectively. It was definitely hard to choose between the two and ultimately the winner was decided upon based on the intense roar of the crowd as Sommer took the stage during the 2nd round. G.I. Jane was definitely hot on her heels in a very close second place, perhaps we'll see miss Jane back on the stage this coming Thursday at Double Days as Week 2 of the Carp Calendar Cutie Contest gets underway.

This year's Carp Calendar Cutie Contest began with a bang as what appeared to be hundreds of people packed into The View on Lake Wissota. The turnout for the first 2009 Carp Calendar Cutie Contest seems pointed towards it being a regularly packed event for the next 11 weeks!

Here are some more pictures of Sommer, Miss January and 1st Carp Calendar Cutie for the 2009 Calendar:

This year's Carp Calendar Cutie Contest is sponsored by 99.9 The Carp and Miller Light. DJs Al Shannon, Sleaze, and Cooper were again on hand to take care of the contest's logistics. With 4 contestants, 3 Carp DJs, and 3 Judges, the Sausage Factor comes in at a 1.5 guy to girl ratio. The Attractiveness Rating comes in at a 10 out of 10 obviously because of the nature of the contest, but it looks like there is a definite need for more contestants!

Beer Rating: 5/5
Sausage Factor: 1.5

Attractiveness Rating: 10/10

Note: The results of this event are skewed since guys can't enter the contest and we only rate the contest and the contestants.

Double Days | Eau Claire, Wisconsin

Last Friday Night we decided to make another trip out to Double Days which is located at 3020 London Road to have a few drinks with some of the guys from Orestus. It has been quite a while since the last time we reviewed Double Days and so we decided to take some numbers and put another review out there. Right around 10:45pm we found the Sausage Factor to be only 1.29 with 49 guys and 38 girls in the place, though none of them happened to be on the dance floor yet. The Attractiveness Rating weighed in pretty high at an 8/10, and Cooper from "99.9 The Carp" was on hand as one of the DJs for the evening playing some music with a Hip Hop Vibe.

The layout for Double Days hadn't really changed since the last time we were there, but there had definitely been a nice face-lift performed on the place. The normal painted walls had been replaced with some nice wood trimming and most of the older TVs had been taken out in favor of some nice new flat screens. There were still around 9 video machines, 8 TVs playing sports and news, 5 dart boards, a couple scratch card machines, and 1 pool table all in the main bar. We again asked how the dartboards were at Double Days and received the thumbs up sign as we were told that the dartboards were hardly ever unused. We would have to agree with that assessment since almost every time we've been here they have been packed with dart players.

The dance floor is still located right in front of the DJ area and though it remained unused for about 30 minutes after our arrival, by midnight it was pretty packed. The dance crowd was mostly girls but a few guys trickled in here an there. In the past it has been pretty normal to see a lot of action on the dance floor at Double Days on Friday and Saturday nights. If you like to dance to Hip Hop and dance music you may want to check this place out on the weekend.

The side room, or "The Back Pool Room" as we've labeled it before, still has its own separate feel. Here you will find 4 pool tables and a few regular tables to sit at. The music in this room was a mix of rock and metal. The pool room is right next to the restrooms so we'll chat about those next. I'm not sure about the women's restroom, but the men's restroom has two TVs set above the urinals for the viewing pleasure of those gentlemen taking care of their business. But... I've never seen these TVs on, so I'm not sure what they are there for. The restrooms were stocked well this evening and there's still this one toilet that sits awkwardly in one corner without a seat or anything. We think it's meant to be another urinal or something.

The second set of readings came after a pitcher of Michelob Golden Draft Light and the new head count weighed in at 49 men to the 38 women with the ratio remaining the same at a Sausage Factor of 1.29, not bad at all. The Attractiveness Rating however would slip somewhat to midway between 6 and 7/10.

As the evening died down so did the action on the dance floor. At around 1am or so the dance floor emptied and people began to move on to other venues. We had a great time this evening and would have to give the experience a 4/5 Beers. The Sausage Factor remained the same most of the night at a 1.29 and the Attractiveness Rating averaged out to a respectable 7/10. We've always liked the bartenders at Double Days, they are very sociable and can mix pretty much anything you are looking for. The last time we were in I believe one of our party members delighted himself with a Mountain Dew, Red Bull, and Vodka concoction thrown all together in one big pitcher. Tasty to say the least!

Beer Rating: 4/5
Sausage Factor: 1.29
Attractiveness Rating: 7/10

Tailgates | Eau Claire, Wisconsin

Last weekend we took a trip over to the west-side of Eau Claire to drop in at Tailgates. This Sports Bar & Grill is located at 1505 North Clairemont Avenue. We weren't able to find their website, but you can find them on Myspace if you want to learn about their coming attractions.

It was a later evening for us because a certain someone had to finish a couple finals (ok... it was me, but I made up for it by paying for the 1st pitcher!). The pitcher was priced well at $6.75, and we ordered up an appetizer basket of cheese curds for $5.75. Fortunately for us the Tailgates kitchen is open right up until bar close.

The main bar is pretty big and rounds the corner to the dance floor and the area where live bands can play. This evening we had to pay a $2 cover to listen to the sounds of the Jacob Heart Band from Minneapolis. They actually weren't that good until the end of the night when they started covering some of the livelier songs on their set list. If you guys are reading this post try to start with those songs even if you have to play them twice (first to start your show and then again at the end of the night). Trust me, your show will be much better for it!

On the outside Tailgates looks to be fairly average in size but once you enter it spreads out and each area becomes surprisingly large. In the main bar there are 5 TVs where those sitting at the bar or in the 3 tables along the wall can watch sports and the band that is playing on any given evening. To the left as you enter there is a good-sized room with pool tables and dartboards. To the right there are some tables set up for casual conversation and drinking; this area leads to the dance floor and stage area for bands. The stage and dance area has 8 tables for people to sit at while they are watching the band play. There is also a big screen TV as well as a couple dartboards in this area.

One of the more interesting about Tailgates is that they use their closed-circuit television system really well on nights when they have live bands. Instead of showing random tv shows or a slide-show of their events, they actually display a live feed of the band! Pretty nice for those people that want to sit at the bar but still watch the band play. Here's an short video for what I am talking about, it shows what you can see while sitting at the bar (it's basically a video of a video :P).

Tailgates was pretty busy when we arrived, though the dance floor could have used a lot more dancers. At 11:40pm there were 39 guys and 15 girls giving us a Sausage Factor of roughly 2.6 which is kind of high but we've definitely seen higher. The Attractiveness Rating was pretty good and weighed in at around 8/10. We asked the bartender whether or not Tailgates had their own house shot and found out that like some of the other bars in town they brew up their own rendition of the "apple pie" shot. Just so you are aware, the brew over at Tailgates is really freaking good. We pretty much had a consensus that they have the best "apple pie" shot in the city.

Our second set of readings came closer to 1am and the ratio of guys to girls became a bit smaller with 15 guys and 10 girls. Not really "busy", but still sociable. The Attractiveness Rating had gone down roughly 2 points and stood at a steady 6/10. Averaging the evening out we'd state that our experience was a solid 4/5 Beers with a 2.05 Sausage Factor and a 7/10 Attractiveness Rating.

The prices at Tailgates are fair and it's a nice bonus to have live music (even if they didn't play the good stuff until late). The layout of the bar is pretty nice and the restrooms are clean and well stocked. We'd definitely give it the thumbs up for an evening out for fun or even to wind down at the end of a long day.

Beer Rating: 4/5
Sausage Factor: 2.05

Attractiveness Rating: 7/10
